The most popular method for monumental memorials is to inscribe the granite with gold lettering. Given the complexity, and permanency, of the lettering process there are many checks in place to ensure the final inscription is exactly what you have asked for.
To begin with, a draft is made on the computer. After your approval, a stencil is made up and placed on the headstone to allow you to see what the final inscription will look like. Once final approval has been made, the inscription is cut into the granite using compressed air with garnet under high pressure. Yellow paint is sprayed over the stencilled letters and then the stencils are removed so that the gold leaf sheets can be gently pressed onto the paint. The monument is then given a final polish.
